What are Gum Grafts and Soft Tissue Grafts?

You might be wondering what a gum or soft tissue graft consists of. We find that understanding procedures and what they like can put our patients' minds at ease. We want our patients to feel comfortable and informed for all the procedures and services we offer. There is no need to panic if you heard you need a gum graft. This might give you a bit of anxiety, but you can have peace of mind through understanding the procedure. A gum graft is often needed to protect teeth when you have pronounced gum recession. Exposed teeth can be easily damaged, so a gum graft can help protect teeth. Also, some patients choose to have this procedure done to improve appearance and have a smile they feel happier with.

Gum recession is when the tissue that covers the tooth root starts to pull away from the tooth. It exposes more of the tooth than normal and even the tooth root. As this problem gets more pronounced, it can cause damage to the supporting jawbone. Gum recession is a very common issue that often goes untreated until the condition worsens. Often, people don’t notice their gums receding as this happens gradually. But, an exposed tooth can look unpleasant and also cause problems like tooth sensitivity.

What are the Different Procedures Like?

There are three different kinds of gum tissue grafts you can get at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale. We will determine which type is best for you based on your specific needs and dental history.

  1. Connective Tissue Grafts

This is the most common method that treats root exposure. Dr. Loshak takes a flap of skin from the roof of the mouth and places the connective tissue underneath over the exposed root.

  2. Free Gingival Grafts

This method involves taking tissue from the roof of the mouth and then placed onto the exposed tooth. Dr. Loshak uses this method with people who have thin gums and need extra tissue to protect and pad the gums.

  3. Pedicle Grafts

This procedure takes tissue from an area near the affected tooth. The periodontist pulls the flap to cover the exposed area. He only performs this procedure for people who have enough gum tissue around the tooth.

In most cases, patients can go home following the procedure. Our team will give you specific care instructions to follow after the procedure. At Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, we can perform different kinds of gum tissue grafts based on our patient's needs.
