A Good Smile vs. A Great Smile

There are many cosmetic dentistry options to choose from. Are you ashamed of the way your teeth look? Do you find yourself covering your mouth while laughing, or avoiding family pictures at all costs? Your overall dental health and appearance can significantly affect your self esteem, which can in turn affect your ability to make friends, get jobs, and even date. In fact, one study conducted by the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics found that people with straight, healthy-looking teeth are perceived to be more intelligent and organized than people who have a damaged, unhealthy-looking smile. Your smile matters, and Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale is here to help.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures To Correct Any Issue

Here at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, our dentists will carefully evaluate the health of your teeth and then recommend a treatment plan to give you the smile of your dreams. Here are just a few of the cosmetic dentistry procedures that we can use to perfect your teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Over the years, your teeth can become yellowed, stained, and dingy. Fortunately, our office provides a wide range of dental whitening treatments to brighten your smile. In addition to at-home kits, which allow you to whiten your teeth according to your own timetable and daily schedule, we also offer in-office whitening sessions that will whiten your teeth in a single visit. Both methods are incredibly effective, safe, and provide lasting results.

Cosmetic Bonding

If your teeth are shaped strangely or you are tired of dealing with an unsightly gap, cosmetic bonding might help our dentists to make your smile look perfect. Cosmetic bonding involves shaping a small amount of tooth-colored dental resin around your existing tooth to reshape the tooth. Newer bonding materials can last for as long as 10-15 years, and they can be dyed to match your teeth perfectly.

Dental Implants

Our clinicians have spent years learning about dental implants and honing the craft of placing natural-looking, durable implants, the healthiest and sturdiest tooth replacement option available. Dental implants replace your missing tooth from the root up, using biocompatible titanium to encourage bone growth around the implant site. By using state-of-the-art imaging devices and newer materials, our dentists can give you implants that look like they have always been a part of your smile.

We also offer orthodontic services, including traditional braces, retainers, and appliances, as well as Invisalign. Invisalign invisible braces are removable for comfort and convenience, and don’t require frequent in-office adjustments like traditional methods. With the right orthodontic treatment, you’ll be able to enjoy a straight smile, fewer speech problems, and cleaner teeth.

Tooth Reshaping

If your teeth are chipped or strangely shaped, they can throw off your entire smile. Fortunately, our dentists can help by reshaping your teeth. Whether filing down a long tooth or adding a crown or dental bonding material to a short or damaged one, we can balance out your smile for a perfect first impression.

Gum Treatments

If your gums are discolored or your gum line is overgrown or misshapen, gum contouring or bleaching can help to prefect the look of your smile. Our clinicians use a precision laser to lighten, remove, or reshape gum tissue. Also, since this laser disinfects on contact, our patients enjoy fewer complications, reduced pain, and a faster procedure.

Through the art of cosmetic dentistry, the clinicians at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale can give you the smile you have always wanted. Orthodontics: The First Recognized Dental Speciality

InvisalignCrooked Teeth Are More Than A Cosmetic Issue

Crooked teeth can do more than be devastating for your self-esteem. In addition to making it difficult to smile for pictures or get close to the people you love, crooked teeth can also harm your oral health. Here are a few issues that might arise if your teeth aren’t aligned properly.

  • Muscle Strain and Jaw Problems: Crooked teeth can throw off your bite and affect the way that you chew and talk, which can cause muscle strain and jaw problems. This misalignment can also affect the face of your shape and cause speech problems, such as a lisp. In addition to suffering from an unnatural appearance, patients who have crooked teeth frequently report problems such as neck pain, headaches, and painful jaws.
  • Tooth Erosion: When teeth don’t line up like they should, your teeth can develop unnatural erosion patterns. For example, instead of eroding along the surface, they might erode along the side at an angle, throwing off the shape of your teeth. Tooth fractures are also common in patients who have crooked teeth, since the mouth doesn’t close properly.
  • Gum Disease: Crooked teeth are also more difficult to clean and keep clean, since jagged gum lines, overly tight junctions, and strange gaps can collect food debris and be difficult to brush. Over time, the plaque in these areas can harbor high levels of bacteria, which can penetrate under the gum line and cause gum disease.
  • Increases Risk of Oral Injuries: When teeth are jutting out at strange angles, the mouth is at a higher risk of oral injury. For example, if a patient with severely crooked teeth gets hit in the face during a sports game or a car accident, the teeth can penetrate through the lips or gum tissue.

The History of Orthodontics

The inherent issues of crooked teeth have been recognized for centuries. Although you might assume that orthodontics is a relatively new field, it was actually the first dental specialty, practiced by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. In fact, archeologists have even discovered crude metal bands wrapped around teeth on mummies to close gaps, and ligature wire was found in a Roman tomb. Despite these early inventions, most orthodontic inventions didn’t occur until after the 18th century.

Modern Advances In Orthodontics

Orthodontics is one of the nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, and the field has come a long way—even in the last twenty years. In addition to using advanced imaging to map out an orthodontic plan, modern orthodontists have access to smaller, stronger screws and durable, yet invisible dental cement. Modern clinicians also offer a large range of braces, including lingual braces, which are installed on the inner sides of teeth, self-litigating braces, and the Invisalign retainer system, which is completely clear and removable.

The Importance of Working With An Orthodontist

Unlike general dentists, who basically receive an introductory course in orthodontics, orthodontists receive an additional two to three years of training to learn more about the bite, proper alignment procedures, and jaw problems. Orthodontists can treat a huge variety of alignment problems, including overcrowding, gapping, and teeth that haven’t moved down into their places correctly.

Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale is proud to work with a highly experienced orthodontist, Dr. Frank Celenza. Amongst other achievements, Dr. Celenza has been designated an Invisalign Premiere Provider since 2014. If you are interested in orthodontic treatment, make an appointment with us today.

The Benefits of Cosmetic Bonding

The benefits of cosmetic bondingTwo of the most versatile procedures in cosmetic dentistry are porcelain veneers and dental bonding. Whereas veneers are made from thin shells of ceramic, dental bonding uses the same composite resin substance that composes tooth-colored fillings. This resin is applied to your teeth and skillfully sculpted into the desired shape.

Veneers and cosmetic bonding have similar uses and can both be used to repair cracks and chips in the teeth, to correct discoloration, to make teeth appear straighter, to narrow gaps between teeth, and to change their length and shape for a better appearance. Porcelain veneers are a better long-term solution in those who qualify for them, but despite its shorter lifespan, cosmetic bonding offers several advantages which can make it the best option in many cases.

When veneers fail
Porcelain veneers rely on the patient having the structure of their natural teeth intact enough to support them. If the damage to your teeth is extensive enough, you may not qualify for veneers at all. Cosmetic bonding is the go-to option in this type of case, and can provide visually similar results.

The fastest option
Dental bonding allows for immediate improvement in the appearance of your teeth in as short a time as possible. Where veneers take multiple visits to create and apply, cosmetic bonding can be completed in a single visit to our office, in as little as half an hour to an hour per tooth. It is the quickest cosmetic dentistry solution for almost any visual defect.

Cosmetic dentistry on a budget
The factor which does the most to set cosmetic bonding apart is that it is the most economical way to correct almost any dental flaw. While it isn’t a perfect cure-all, and is a short-term solution in dentistry terms, dental bonding is very effective for the three to five years that it lasts and provides an inexpensive alternative when other procedures are out of reach.

Talk to a Specialist
Deciding between porcelain veneers and dental bonding will always come down to the specifics of your individual situation. Our great group of doctors can help you decide which solution is right for you. Call today to make an appointment with our office, or request an appointment online.

Restoring A Natural Smile

there are many options to restore your natural smile.Even after pain has been relieved and function has been restored, a smile damaged by injury or disease can cause self-consciousness and a drop in self-esteem. How our teeth look is almost as important as how they feel. For those who have lost one or more teeth, Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale offers treatments to make your smile once again look natural, healthy, and whole.

When you are missing even one tooth, your entire smile is compromised. Not only does the gap draw the eye, but it can lead to the loss of other teeth due to their tendency to shift into the gap as well as the bone’s natural deterioration after tooth loss. The best way to protect your teeth, as well as to restore the appearance of your smile, is to fill the gap. Bridges are one option for replacing missing teeth. Also called partial dentures, bridges replace a tooth or group of adjacent teeth after they have been lost for any reason. Bridges rely on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap to anchor them. They can be affixed temporarily or permanently, depending on your needs. It is also possible to secure a bridge to one or more dental implants.

Dental Implants
As dental technology advances, our ability to replicate and restore the natural structure of your teeth continues to grow. Dental implants are the result of many years of progress in dentistry. They allow us to replace individual teeth with sturdy, permanent prosthetics, or to provide a more solid foundation for full and partial dentures. The post of the implant is integrated into your jaw in a similar way to your natural tooth roots, and can help preserve the bone as well as filling out your smile.

Full Mouth Restoration
No matter how badly damaged your smile is, Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale can help you improve your dental health and beautify your grin. Even if you have suffered extensive injury or decay, we will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan and bring your whole smile back to its natural radiance.

Whether you have a new gap in your teeth, or have lived for years with empty gums, Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale is ready to help you replace your missing teeth. Contact us by phone or online today to schedule your consultation, and let us restore your smile to its natural beauty!

What Is Dental Bonding?

What is Dental Bonding? Most of the procedures available to modern cosmetic dentistry are designed to address only a small range of specific problems. But one of the exceptions is dental bonding. Dental bonding is a possible solution to almost any cosmetic problem, from minor chips and stains to major tooth damage from decay or trauma. At Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, we offer dental bonding as a quick and inexpensive fix for a wide range of dental issues.

Composite resins

Dental bonding relies upon composite resins, the same material used to produce tooth-colored fillings for cavities. Composite resins have much the same luster as a natural tooth and can be mixed to match the color of the teeth around them. They are then sculpted onto your teeth to produce the desired effect, whether that is covering a stain, repairing damage, or changing the shape or size of your natural teeth.

Dental bonding is:

  • Fast. Dental bonding can take as little as half an hour per tooth, making it the quickest solution to most cosmetic problems.
  • Inexpensive. Compared to porcelain veneers, which are most similar to dental bonding in terms of the problems they can address, dental bonding is much cheaper, making it an option for anyone on a budget.
  • Versatile. This technique can be used to prepare cracks, chips, and broken teeth, to conceal stains and discoloration, to minimize gaps between teeth, to lengthen short teeth, to reshape crooked or oddly-formed teeth, and in short, to make your teeth look their best.
  • Aesthetic. With the range of colors available and the natural-looking texture, teeth repaired with dental bonding are virtually indistinguishable from your healthy, natural teeth.
  • An alternative to veneers. Occasionally, if a tooth is badly damaged, there may not be eno9ugh of the original tooth structure left to support a crown or veneer. In some of these cases, dental bonding is still an option. We can let you know which treatments are available in your case after an exam.

The only major limitation of dental bonding is its temporary nature. Repairs made using this technique are likely to last approximately five years, whereas other repair techniques can last ten or more. However, this may still be the best option for your individual case; we can discuss your choices with you during a consultation.

Full Mouth Reconstruction Procedures

What to expect with full mouth reconstructionIf you have sustained serious damage to your teeth or jaw, or if you suffer from several major dental issues, you may be a candidate for full mouth reconstruction, also called full mouth restoration or full mouth rehabilitation. Full mouth reconstruction is not a single procedure, but rather a treatment plan for addressing your particular combination of dental health problems. The staff of Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale includes specialists covering almost all areas of dentistry, which means that we can offer you in-house treatment for almost any issue. If you require a service we don’t offer, we will refer you to another trusted specialist who can give you the care you need.

What to expect

Because every full mouth reconstruction is tailored to the particular needs of the patient, the course of treatment must begin with an exam to determine the issues and establish a plan, determining what procedures are necessary and which take priority. When you come in for your consultation, you’ll be given an exam to assess the state of your teeth, as well as their supporting structures, the gums and bone. Depending on our exact findings, the treatment we recommend may include any combination of periodontal, orthodontal, restorative, and cosmetic treatments, oral surgery, implants, and TMJ and bruxism treatments. Anything from scaling and root planing to crowns and veneers can be part of the process of healing your bite.

The benefits of full mouth reconstruction

If you have been living with severe decay or have received a debilitating dental injury, dental reconstruction can bring your mouth back to full health and function. Damaged and missing teeth will be repaired or replaced, diseased gum tissue will be allowed to heal, and deteriorated bone will be encouraged to grow back. Full mouth reconstructions provide relief from the pain of damaged teeth, new confidence with your new smile, and the ability to eat without pain and difficulty. If poor dental health has impacted your life, schedule your consultation today so that we can help you heal.

Happy Thanksgiving from Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale!

As you kick off the holiday season, we want to remind you to be prepared for all the extra excitement that Thanksgiving brings. Make sure you have your turkeys picked out, your bags packed or your house ready for guests, all your invitations delivered, and everything in place, not just for the upcoming feast–but for your dental care afterward.

As you enjoy your Thanksgiving meal, the bacteria in your mouth will also be feasting on all the extra sugar that those sweet potatoes, pies, and cranberry sauce contain. A large meal can accelerate the development of plaque in your mouth, so be sure to brush and floss with especial care after your Thanksgiving meal. Also watch out for any staining caused by wine or after-dinner coffee, both of which can leave dark spots on your teeth. If you’re participating in a game of Thanksgiving football, take care not to protect your teeth. Dental injuries are common during contact sports.

And if anything should go wrong, remember that Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale is here to help with all your dentistry needs. We’ll resume business after the holiday; call us during our scheduled hours of operation to get an appointment, or schedule your exam online.

Above all, enjoy your holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving,

Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale
