Don’t Let Your Teeth Become a Trick or Treat Situation!

Keep your teeth healthy this Halloween!

At Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, we are here to help our patients make educated choices for their oral hygiene. We know that there are certain times of year when it is hard to maintain healthy eating and oral health projects. Halloween is one of those times. There is so much candy around that it can be hard not to eat a lot of that candy. We get it! But, eating too much candy, and too many sweets in general, can lead to some bad oral hygiene habits. While you can enjoy some sweet snacks here and there, we do have some tips to help you maintain good oral hygiene habits during this sweet, spooky season.

Tips From Your Westchester Cosmetic Dentist

Here are our tips for having a healthy Halloween. These tips can also help you keep your kids with healthy oral hygiene habits. We know that getting kids to put away all that candy can be a challenge. But, these tips can make things a little easier.

  1. Timing is Important

Your kids (or you because we have all been there) should eat the Halloween treats with meals or shortly after meals. Saliva production increases during meals which can help rinse away food particles.

  2. Stay Away From Sweet Snacks as Much as Possible

When you’re snacking in-between meals, sugary snacks aren’t a great choice. Try to cut down on snacking on sweets to improve oral health.

  3. Choose the Types of Treats You and Your Children Eat

Hard candies and other sweets that sit in your mouth for long periods of time can be harmful. The length of time a sugary sweet is in the mouth can contribute to tooth decay. A sugar-free candy is also a good option.

  4. Avoid Sticky Candies and Sweets

Candies like taffy and gummies can stick to teeth and take longer to wash away which can lead to higher risk of tooth decay.

  5. Drink More Water

Drinking more water can prevent tooth decay.

  6. Maintain Healthy Brushing and Flossing Habits

Stay up on your and your family’s brushing and flossing habits is important at all times of the year. These daily habits make a big difference in dental hygiene.

  7. Visit Your Westchester Cosmetic Dentist

It’s important to maintain regular check-ups, exams, and cleanings for you and your family during Halloween as well as all through the year. Come visit your Westchester Cosmetic Dentist to get a cleaning or exam.

Can I Keep My Wisdom Teeth?

If you are wondering if you need to remove your wisdom teeth, contact our office today. At Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, we offer a variety of dental procedures. One of the procedures we can provide is the removal of wisdom teeth. Many of our patients wonder if they need to get theirs removed if they have not done so already. Also, some of our patients are parents who wonder if their child will need to get them removed.

Is it Necessary to Have Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Many people have heard that wisdom tooth removal is always necessary. While often it is, there are some patients who do not need to have them removed. Many dentists suggest wisdom teeth removal and an early age to avoid problems down the road. They can cause issues once they are fully formed, so removing them early on can prevent possible problems.

What Problems Can Wisdom Teeth Cause?

Wisdom teeth often do not grow in properly. They might grow in horizontal or crooked. Also, many people do not have a big enough jaw to accommodate wisdom teeth. This can lead to an overcrowded mouth which can cause smiles to shift and become more crooked. And, the area where wisdom teeth sit in the mouth is often hard to brush which makes it a breeding ground for bacteria growth.

How Do I Know if I Need Mine Removed?

If you are wondering if wisdom tooth removal is necessary, here are some signs to look for.

  • Damage to surrounding teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Pain
  • Infections in the back of the mouth

If you have any questions about removal, please do not hesitate to ask. Our team at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale will work with you to figure out the smartest course of action.

What are Some Signs That Wisdom Teeth Can Remain in Place?

For some people, wisdom teeth do not cause a lot of issues. These signs include:

  • Wisdom teeth lining up with your other teeth
  • Having no issues biting or chewing with your wisdom teeth
  • Being able to easily reach and brush your wisdom teeth

Invisalign: What’s the Timeline?

If you are interested in Invisalign, contact your Westchester cosmetic dentist today! It’s no secret that a nice smile can take you far in life, especially when you can smile with confidence. As a Westchester cosmetic dentist, we understand that helping you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted is important. It is also a process that takes time and trust from you. That’s why we want to answer your questions and help you understand the process of Invisalign.

Why Invisalign

Invisalign in Westchester is an easy and inconspicuous way to get your teeth in line. It’s been growing in popularity for the past few years because of its easy-to-use process. The series of plastic aligning trays will slowly move your teeth to the way you and the dentist have determined they should look. Each time you get new trays, a different tooth (or set of teeth) will move, making for an almost painless process. You and your Westchester cosmetic dentist will predetermine which teeth will move when. They are also nearly invisible! This makes them a popular choice for those who don’t want to relive the 80s or spend time in the dentist’s chair getting metal brackets tweaked.

What’s the Timeline?

While each case is different, once you’ve gotten your trays made (from an impression or from a digital scan), you’ll begin wearing the aligner trays. Generally, you will wear a new tray every week, depending on which teeth are moving. The controlled force will either push or turn specific teeth each week. We’ll have you come see us approximately every 4-6 weeks to get your next set of trays, to track your progress, and to make sure your teeth move how you want. The average adult will need about a year to get it all done, but again, the time can vary depending on your needs. You’ll need to wear the trays at least 20-22 hours each day. But, the advantage is that you can remove them to eat and drink, brush or floss.

Come See Us Today!

With Invisalign, you can have the smile you’ve always wanted. You’ll even be able to virtually view how your teeth will look when you’re finished before you even start! Depending on your teeth, your cosmetic dentist may suggest a retainer (also inconspicuous!) to wear, to keep those teeth where they should be. Call us today about Invisalign in Westchester, and we’ll answer all your questions!

Challenge–Keep Your Gums Healthy!

Teeth get all the attention, but your gums want some, too! They’re just as important as your teeth. Your Westchester periodontist knows that a hefty claim like that should come with some good advice. Gums are the bridge between the health of your teeth and the health of your body. Gingivitis, gum disease and periodontitis are much less likely when you care for them. We’d like to give you some tips on taking care of the stuff that holds those pearly whites in place.Your Westchester periodontist challenges you to keep your gums healthy!

Tips for Healthy Gums

  1. Put down the can of soda. No matter which way you look at it, it’s bad for you. It will erode your teeth, fill your mouth with bacteria, and contribute to plaque buildup. That will turn into cavities and gingivitis, not to mention what it does to the rest of your body!
  2. Brush twice per day. This is easier said than done when you’re busy. But, if you consider all the time and money you’ll spend at the dentist if you don’t brush twice per day, it’s worth the hassle. When you’re brushing near your gums, don’t brush in an up-and-down motion, because you don’t want to brush the gums away from the teeth. Keep them where they are.
  3. Get a good toothbrush. It’s sometimes tempting to get a hard-bristled toothbrush, assuming those scrubbers will get more stuff off your teeth. But soft-bristled brushes are what dentists recommend. You want to brush up by your gums (where lots of bacteria congregates), and the soft bristles are much better for that.
  4. Floss as much as you brush (or more). Flossing does something that brushing can’t; it gets those tight spaces between your teeth that the toothbrush can’t. These are the spaces where bacteria flourish. By flossing up to your gums between your teeth, you’ll keep the bacteria away and keep your gums stronger and healthier.
  5. Use a mouthwash. This will kill the bacteria on your gums above the teeth where you didn’t brush.

Don’t wait too long between checkups! We’d love to answer all your questions about gum health and challenge you to have 30 days of excellent gum care. contact one of the best dentists in Westchester for an appointment and gum evaluation.

Pack Healthy Lunches for School

Here are some tips from your Westchester dentist to pack healthy lunches for you your kids. It’s back to school time! That may or may not be exciting for all parties involved–we’re looking at you, Mom.The fact remains that the kiddies will need a lunch to eat away from home. If you’re a lunch packer, your Westchester dentist has a few tips on how to pack a healthy, teeth-friendly lunch that the kids will enjoy.

When we’re talking about oral hygiene, most people think about how often they brush or floss, or how often they go to the dentist. But many don’t consider how their diet can have a big impact on their oral health. There are foods that can really damage teeth and make those trips to the dentist less than fun. But, there are many foods that are great for your body and your teeth. Learn about what to pack from your Westchester dentist here.

What to Pack

Try to pack as much fresh stuff as possible. Fruits and vegetables are great for lunches. They can be cut into finger foods, and are easily eaten raw (no cook time!). If your kids don’t love to eat what’s good for them, make the fruits and veggies more palatable by pairing them with dips. You can make homemade veggie dips by combining plain yogurt and other vegetables in a food processor. You can also buy healthy insta-dips. For the fruit, pair it with some fruity yogurt for dipping. Some of the best dentists in Westchester also want you to make sure that you choose yogurts that are low in sugar.

Try to also include some whole grains, like bread spread with natural peanut butter, different varieties of cooked rice (not white) with chicken (also good cold!), or toasted flaxseed on avocado. There are lots of crackers that are made from whole grains, too. You can also include proteins, like hard-boiled eggs or nuts.

What to Avoid

Try to stay away from packing foods that are sticky or gummy, since that generally means they are mostly sugar. Same goes for lots of packable kids’ drinks, like juice boxes and cans of soda. While some of the juices may be 100% fruit juice, it’s still a lot of sugar, and can wreak havoc on young teeth. Make sure you check labels for the amount of sugar in your foods, since kids only get one set of permanent teeth! It’s usually best to stick with bottled water.

School is Starting, Time for a Checkup!

School is starting, time for a dental checkup with your Westchester dentist! The first day of school is like a new beginning. It gives your child the chance to meet new friends, explore new subjects, and overhaul their look. Our Westchester dentists recommend scheduling a routine dental checkup for your kids before the year starts. Here are a few reasons you should make an appointment for your kids today.

Preventive Services

Spotting and resolving dental problems is faster and cheaper than handling widespread decay. This is why dental checkups are a good idea before your student gets busy with their studies. During routine checkups, dentists will examine your child’s teeth and gums. Preventive treatments like fluoride varnishes and deep cleanings will help to remove decay and protect your child’s enamel from bacterial acids.

Athletic Mouthguards

Kids who take part in contact sports are prone to oral injuries. Have your child fitted for an athletic mouthguard with our Westchester dentists. Custom athletic mouthguards fit the exact contours of your child’s mouth, stabilizing their neck and jaw. In fact, research shows that student athletes who wear stock bite guards are more than twice as likely to sustain concussions than athletes who wear custom mouthguards.

Cosmetic Repairs

Help your child feel better about their smile by bringing them in for a cosmetic dentistry consultation. Our Westchester cosmetic dentists can talk with your teen or child about what they like and don’t like about their smile. Then, they can recommend treatments to improve the look of the teeth.

Orthodontic Care

Crooked teeth can cause a wide range of issues, including oral lacerations, a higher risk of gingivitis, bad breath, and poor self-esteem. We are happy to offer Invisalign, helping to correct your child’s bite and dental health.

Are Dental Implants a Good Investment?

We’ve all heard the saying, “You get what you pay for.” And while it’s sometimes a hard lesson to learn, it’s no less true in the world of dentistry. When things go awry in your mouth, looking for the cheapest option can be tempting, but really, we’re talking about your mouth here. And as your Westchester prosthodontist, we know that oral health is an investment for a healthy and happy life!

learn why dental implants in Westchester can be a good investment.

If you’re considering dental implants in Westchester, but are balking at the price tag, consider the following:

  • First Impressions

Your smile IS your first impression. Make it a good one. Unsightly teeth are the bane of an impression’s existence, and we don’t want to mess around with cheaper, less quality options when dealing with your money maker (your smile, of course).

  • Durability

Dental implants are built to last, so once set by your dental implant surgeon in Westchester, you’re done for life. No need to have crowns or bridges replaced every 7 years or so, which could lead to higher costs when added up.

  • Closest Thing to Natural

Crowns and bridges can deteriorate or interfere with speaking or eating. But, dental implants feel, look, and act like natural teeth, leaving you with no impediments.

  • Maintain Appearance

Sometimes, with individual tooth replacements, the shape of your face can change with sinking cheeks and sagging jaw lines. But with dental implants, the shape of your smile and face will remain the same.

  • No Soaking Cups

Dental implants do not need soaking in a cup overnight like your grandma’s dentures. Enough said.

  • Like Nothing Ever Went Wrong in the First Place

With other options, there is a worry that things will wiggle, fall out, look out of place, and embarrass us when we talk, eat, or laugh. But with dental implants, you can live your life as if nothing was ever wrong with your teeth in the first place.

  • Healthy Bones

Dental implants are the only dental restoration method that actually fosters and encourages bone growth in your jaw. With other methods, the lack of a tooth and root can lead to deterioration of the jaw bone, leaving it vulnerable. With implants, the new titanium roots bond with the bone, making your jaw strong.

In short, dental implants are a reliable, healthy, and excellent investment in your smile. Call your Westchester cosmetic dentist and find out more today!

We will listen to your situation and give you individualized care. You can trust you are in good hands with our experienced periodontists!

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal posts inserted into the jawbone below the gums. These dental implants provide a strong, stable foundation to attach an artificial crown. These implants creates a root so so the crown lasts longer. The implant keeps artificial teeth strong and can last a lifetime.

What are the Two Main Types of Dental Implants?

Endosteal implants: This is when your Westchester periodontist inserts the implant into your jaw. Then, after it heals, he will perform another to connect a post to the implant. After that, your prosthodontist will connect an artificial tooth to the post.

Subperiosteal implants: This method inserts a metal metal frame into the jawbone below the gums. Then your periodontist attaches a post to the frame, sticking out from the gums. This post is where your prosthodontist attaches the teeth.

What’s a Dental Implant Made Of?

Dental implants come from two different kinds of materials in most cases. These materials are titanium and zirconia. Around 95% of dental implants use titanium. Titanium implants are common because they are versatile. They can use either a one-piece system or a two-piece system. This means that your Westchester periodontist can use different methods with titanium materials depending on the patient. Zirconium is also another safe option, if you happen to be allergic to tianium.

Protect Your Teeth This Summer

It’s time for sports camps, early-morning practices, ball games, fireworks, and family adventures. You make some of the best memories during summertime. But, it’s also the time of year when you need to take extra care not to let your teeth take a hit! We see a lot of injuries because of a lack of protection when playing sports and other rough activities. Mouth guards help to cushion the blow, should your face find itself in the path of a projectile. They give padding to your gums, teeth, and jaw, kind of like a helmet for your mouth. Protecting your upper teeth in particular is vital, since they are usually more forward than your lower teeth, and are more exposed and prone to injury.

Protect your teeth this summer by getting a custom mouth guard from our Westchester Prosthodontist.

How Can I Get A Mouth Guard?

A Prosthodontist is a doctor that specializes in replacing teeth. They also focus on oral disorders and disease, and treating patients with missing teeth or damaged oral tissues. Fortunately for sports teams all around Westchester, our own Prosthodontist, Dr. Brisman, makes custom mouth guards to maximize safety and comfort. When getting a custom mouth guard, we’ll take extra care to get you the right fit. We’ll do this by using a series of dental impressions. Cheaper mouth guards you can buy outside of dentists’ offices often do more damage, as they can move your teeth when they are ill-fitting. They can also cause abrasions on your gums. Consider having one of the best prosthodontists in Westchester for your custom mouth guard. Statistics show that custom mouth guards help protect athletes from traumatic brain injuries!

If an accident should happen, remember that we also have excellent cosmetic dentistry in Westchester. Our dentists specialize in repairing those missing teeth from the opening game and fixing the teeth cracked by an opposing teammate’s elbow. We use bridges, veneers, crowns, or inlays and onlays to get your mouth back to its best smile.

When it comes to getting (and protecting) your best summer smile, be sure and visit Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale for the latest and greatest techniques and procedures. We’ll make sure we understand your needs and get to work finding the best solutions for your mouth. Come in and get your little champs their custom mouth guard today!

How To Find a Dental Implant Surgeon in Westchester, NY

Are you looking for a dental implant surgeon in Westchester? It is important to seek out the right surgeon with not only the education needed, but the right experience. Dental implants are one of the most delicate oral surgery procedures. They need a periodontist and prosthodontist to ensure the procedure’s success. Use the following tips to find a dental implant professional to perform cosmetic dentistry in Westchester. Here are tips to finding the best dental implant surgeon in Westchester, NY

Tip #1: Ask About Experience

When seeking the right professionals to work on your teeth, it is important to start with research. It is vital to find out about the experience and education of the individuals that will perform your procedure. Dr. Loshak is the resident dental implant surgeon and periodontist at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale. Dr. Loshak works closely with Dr. Brisman, a prosthodontist who creates the dental crowns that will be attached to the dental implant. Dental implant procedures require the right training, not just a weekend training course.

Tip #2: Ask to See Their Work

Another important element to consider when searching for a periodontist in Westchester is to review their work. A skilled periodontist will be happy to show you before-and-after images of previous patient’s smiles. Ask them about their work and how many procedures they have performed. While dental implants boast a 98% success rate, you do need to chat with the implant specialist about their personal success rate. You need to talk about the prosthodontist in Westchester and see their work as well. A high-quality prosthetic tooth attached to the implant needs to not only look great, but it needs to function long-term. For our past dental implant work, check out our smile gallery page.

Tip #3: Discuss the Procedure in Detail

When you meet with a periodontist it is important to discuss the procedure in detail. Discuss their techniques and determine how long the procedure will take and what you can expect. Some patients can end up with a minimal recovery while others need to rest for a day or two before returning to work. Going to a single location for dental implants will allow you to avoid several visits to many offices for the dental implant. The costs of the procedure can be lower with everything in-house, and will make it easier for you to have your smile restored.

If you are seeking a dental implant surgeon in Westchester NY, contact Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale. We will be happy to schedule a consultation today.
