Advancements in Dental Implant Technology

Dental implant technology has greatly improved over the years, with a success rate aroun 100%

Although dental implants were invented in the mid-fifties, the technology has continued to improve over the past 60 years. Scientists and dentists have studied dental implants extensively. Thanks to their studies, modern dental implants in Scarsdale are better than ever before. In fact, the success rate for dental implant surgery hovers around 100%, showing just how effective implants can be. Here are five other ways dental implant technology has improved.

  1. Improved Screening

Our implant dentists in Westchester have a good idea of who is a candidate for dental implants. Before you are allowed to have dental implant surgery, your dentist will carefully check your oral health to make sure you aren’t at risk for losing your implant. As a result, the rejection rate for dental implants is very low.

  2. Accurate Imaging

Highly accurate CAT scan systems, MRIs, and cone beam imaging technologies have made implant treatment planning far more accurate. With this new technology, our periodontists can account for even the most microscopic anatomical difference. Using powerful CAD/CAM software, periodontists can also show patients how their smile will look after treatment.

  3. Posts that Match Your Bone Texture

Although traditional dental implant posts were smooth, researchers found that integration rates were higher when posts were roughened slightly. That way, the posts mimic natural bone texture and can work seamlessly with your jaw. Because roughened posts have more surface area, they improve adhesion rates and allow people to heal faster.

  4. Comfortable Abutments

Implant dentists have also improved abutments, which are the collars that hold the crown in place. In addition to being easier for dentists and periodontists to install, they are also more comfortable for the patient during healing.

  5. Better Crowns

Modern implant dentists have designed crowns with incredibly realistic colors, textures, and opacities, so they look identical to your natural teeth. New crowns also have a longer lifespan than the standard composite or porcelain materials.

What is a Smile Makeover?

Smile Makeover in Westchester

Did you know that your smile is one of the first things people notice about you? It’s key to making a great first impression, and a great smile obviously comes in handy from dating to work and every situation in between.

But what if your smile just isn’t quite right? If it’s dull, chipped, or otherwise marred, you’re likely looking for a way to fix that. Luckily, a smile makeover in Westchester is just what the dentist ordered to get your smile looking its best once more.

What is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover is the process of using cosmetic dentistry to fix your smile’s appearance. This is done through the use of various procedures, such as cosmetic bonding, dental veneers, and teeth whitening. That’s not every procedure involved in a smile makeover in Scarsdale, but it gives you an idea of what to expect when getting your smile professionally fixed.

Why use a Professional Cosmetic Dentist?

A lot of people often question the value of using professional dental services for a smile makeover, especially if you only need your teeth whitened. After all, aren’t the teeth whitening treatments sold in the grocery store good enough for your teeth?

In theory they are, but there are several advantages to professional teeth whitening. For starters, at-home whitening takes quite a long time to whiten your teeth to the desired shade. In as little as one appointment, professional whitening can transform your teeth up to eight shades whiter than when you entered the office.

Additionally, when getting teeth whitened professionally, you don’t have to worry about getting the harsh gels on your gums and causing irritation. Our dental professionals are trained to ensure that your whitening experience is as pleasant and enjoyable as possible.

What are Veneers?

Dental veneers are a cosmetic procedure growing in popularity. They’re simply wafer-thin porcelain shells which fit on the outside surface of your teeth, effectively giving them an entirely new face. If you have teeth stained deep into the enamel, or minor chips and cracks, veneers are a great option to include in your smile makeover.

What is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is the process of using a pliable resin to fill in gaps, chips, or fractures in your teeth. It’s great for smaller issues.

All of these Westchester cosmetic dentistry services – and many more – combine to create a smile makeover and transform your appearance into something you can always be proud of.

How Do I Find a Prosthodontist in Westchester County?

Finding a Prosthodontist in WestchesterIf you need a smile makeover, finding the right Scarsdale prosthodontist is essential. As experts in dental reconstruction and aesthetics, prosthodontists can help you to enjoy a smile that is just as comfortable as it is beautiful. Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to narrow down the list of professional prosthodontists available, which is why it is crucial to know what to look for. Here are a few tips for finding a great prosthodontist in Westchester County.

  • Ask Friends for RecommendationsOne of the best ways to find a great prosthodontist is to talk with friends and family members. Modern dental bridges, implants, and appliances are more realistic than ever before, which is why you might not be able to tell who has and who hasn’t worked with a dental professional to have their smile restored. Talk with your friends and family about what you are looking for in a prosthodontist, and ask if anyone has a favorite office.
  • Visit Offices in PersonAfter you have an idea of where to go, visit the offices in person. When you visit, pay attention to how you are treated and how you feel in the office. Look for a practice that has a welcoming staff and a well-maintained building. While you are there, ask the front desk if they have a list of accepted insurance plans so that you can find out whether or not services would be covered.
  • Talk With the ProsthodontistIf possible, see if you can meet different prosthodontists in Westchester in person to see what they are like. Try to find a dentist that you have a rapport with so that appointments will be pleasant.
  • Check CredentialsTo make sure that your chosen dentist is certified to perform prosthodontics work, check their licenses by visiting your state board website. By checking online databases, you can find out more about their dental license, whether or not they are certified to offer sedation, and when they received their training.
  • Explore Their WebpageCheck out different prosthodontists’ websites to see what kinds of information they have available online. Web pages that are well-maintained and informative could make preparing for or recovering from a procedure much easier.

Dental Implants in Westchester

Dental Implants in WestchesterAre you one of the millions of Americans who is missing teeth? In addition to a few missing teeth affecting your self-esteem and your ability to talk properly, missing teeth can also damage the health of your dental arches, putting the rest of your teeth at risk.

Fortunately, dental implants can recreate the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. Dental implants are supported by a small titanium post that is anchored into the jawbone. Over time, these implants fuse with your natural bone, creating a strong, stable support system for your new tooth. Here are just a few of the incredible benefits of dental implants in Westchester County, and how Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale can improve your smile.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Appearance: Unlike bridges or dentures, which can look unnatural to the naked eye, dental implants are independently supported and customized for your smile, creating a completely natural look.
  • Confidence: Because dental implants are firmly supported by your bone tissue, you won’t have to worry about slippage, dental adhesives, or bad odors from accumulating food debris between your denture and your palate. For this reason, dental implants allow people to talk and chew confidently.
  • Healthier for your Smile: Unlike dentures and bridges, which can place extra strain on your teeth and gums and ultimately lead to bone loss, dental implants help to strengthen your dental arches, warding off bone and tooth loss. Dental implants recreate the natural stimulation your teeth create with your jaw tissue, which helps to keep your remaining teeth strong and healthy.
  • Lifespam: Dental implants have an extremely high success rate and can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Although the initial cost of dental implants is higher than other tooth replacement options, implants are cost effective because they last so long.
  • Simple Care: Dental implants are easy to take care of. Unlike dentures, which have to be removed and sanitized daily, dental implants simply need normal checkups, and daily brushing and flossing.

Why You Should Work with a Periodontist

If you are thinking about dental implants in Westchester, don’t trust your teeth to anyone other than a periodontist. In addition to receiving years of extra formal training regarding the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, periodontists also study the placement and care of dental implants extensively. Periodontists, such as the experts at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, can help you to achieve the smile of your dreams. Want to know if you are a candidate? Call Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale today to know if you are a candidate for dental implants in Westchester.

The Advantages of Invisalign

Invisalign in Westchester

Crooked teeth can make you hesitate before smiling, talking, or laughing, in addition to compromising your oral health. Crooked teeth are more difficult to keep clean, which is why orthodontic care is considered an effective preventive dental health treatment. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with a mouth filled with wires and brackets if you want to get your teeth straightened. Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale is proud to offer Invisalign®, the original clear orthodontic care system for teens and adults. Here are some of the powerful advantages of Invisalign® in Westchester.

Nearly Invisible

One of the biggest advantages of Invisalign® retainers is that they are nearly invisible. Created from acrylic that is just as durable and clear as it is safe, Invisalign® retainers make orthodontic treatment less stressful for everyone. Whether you are a busy professional concerned about how you look at work or a teenager concerned about maintaining a dating life, Invisalign® can help you to straighten your teeth without all of the stigma associated with traditional braces.

Unlike traditional braces, which rely on a complex, uncomfortable network of sharp wires and brackets, Invisalign® retainers are smooth, contoured, and completely customized for your smile. In addition to preventing oral lacerations and scaring, Invisalign® retainers don’t have food restrictions like traditional braces do.

Completely Removable

Your Invisalign® retainers will be completely removable, and you only need to wear the retainers 22 out of 24 hours a day. In addition to removing your orthodontic appliances to eat and drink, you can also take them out to give that important speech or go out to dinner with a friend.

Easy to Maintain

Because Invisalign® retainers are removable, patients have the opportunity to take better care of their teeth and gums during orthodontic treatment, preventing gingivitis and periodontal disease. Patients who have Invisalign® typically report whiter, healthier teeth at the end of their orthodontic treatment when compared with friends or family members who have braces.

Happy Holidays from Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale

Keep an eye on your oral health this holiday season. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our incredible patients and dedicated staff members a wonderful holiday season. We hope that you have the chance to take time away from work, enjoy family and friends, and participate in some of your favorite holiday traditions.

We also want to thank you for making Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale what it is today. We couldn’t have grown into one of the best Scarsdale cosmetic dentistry practices without all of your loyal support, and for that, we truly thank you. We’ll be doing our best to make the holiday brighter for those around us, and hope you’ll do the same.

With that in mind, we also want to let you know that during the holidays, we are here to serve you. If you have a dental emergency, contact our office as soon as possible, and we will do everything we can to help you.

Mind Your Oral Health this Holiday Season

This time of year is filled with seasonal delicacies, and some of those items aren’t as good for your teeth as they are for your spirit. During this time of year, we like to encourage our patients to take care of their oral health by watching out for foods that could damage your smile.

Try to avoid hard foods like unshelled nuts, hard candy, and hidden bones. These foods can damage existing dental work or cause fractures. Also, avoid over consuming citrus fruits, which are exceptionally high in acids that can soften and erode dental enamel. Last but not least, try to limit your portions of the sugary foods that could contribute to tooth decay. Your careful eating will lead to happier dental visits in the spring.

May your holiday season be a happy one,

Steven A. Brisman, DMD

Dental Implants 101

Learn more about Dental Implants here!Although dental implants in Scarsdale, NY might seem like a space-age procedure, they have been used in professional dentistry for more than 20 years, and modern technologies have made implants better than ever. Dental implants are small titanium posts anchored into the mouth to support false teeth. The implant is topped with an abutment, which connects it to a permanent crown. Because implants are independently supported by natural bone tissue, they help to prevent bone loss while protecting the surrounding teeth and providing a realistic, comfortable tooth replacement.

A Brief History of Dental Implants

Dental implant technology was actually invented on accident by Per-Ingvar Brånemark in 1952. Brånemark and his team were studying healing and blood flow by inserting optical devices into the legs of rabbits. These optical devices were housed in a titanium case. When Brånemark tried to remove the devices a few weeks later, he realized that the posts had fused with the rabbits’ bone tissue.

Brånemark realized that this technology could be applicable in the world of dentistry, so he continued his research and installed the first set of dental implants in the mid 1960’s. Although Brånemark had some challenges convincing the rest of the medical and dental world that his technology worked, he was able to win widespread recognition for his work by the mid 1980’s. Since then, dental implants have become the most effective tooth replacement option available.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Preserve Oral Health

Dental implants are incredibly easy to care for, and can be brushed and flossed just like the rest of your natural teeth. Also, dental implants don’t tug on other healthy teeth like dental bridges do, helping to preserve dental arches as they are.

Restore Confidence

Once dental implants are completely healed, they are incredibly strong and stable, helping patients to enjoy a renewed sense of confidence in their smiles. People with dental implants don’t have to worry about their teeth coming loose as dentures are known to do; they are just as worry-free as natural teeth.

Look Realistic

Dental implants can be crafted to look just like the teeth they are replacing or designed to transform a smile. Made with materials that mimic the color and opacity of the natural teeth, dental implants are incredibly realistic looking, even at a close distance.

Last a Lifetime

With proper care and maintenance, successfully integrated dental implants can last the rest of your life.

The Long-Term Effects of Periodontal Disease

There are long-term effects from periodontal disease. Taking care of your teeth and gums is about more than maintaining a pretty smile. Your oral health is strongly tied to your overall health, and believe it or not, over 120 serious diseases show symptoms in the oral cavity. Periodontal or gum disease has been linked to several of these full-body illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer. Gum disease and these illnesses can cause severe long-term effects.

The Progression of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease starts out as simple gingivitis. The gum tissue might look slightly reddened and feel a little puffy, and patients might struggle with bad breath. However, if gingivitis is left unchecked, it can develop into mild to moderate periodontal disease, marked by bleeding gums and infections.

As gum disease progresses, oral bacteria invade deeper and deeper underneath the gum tissue, eventually damaging the ligaments that hold the teeth in place as well as the underlying bone. Advanced periodontitis is marked by loose or missing teeth, abscesses, and serious inflammation. Because bacteria can kill healthy tissue, some patients with advanced periodontal disease report that the teeth don’t hurt—even when their teeth are visibly diseased and falling out.

Periodontal Disease and Your Health

The long-term effects of periodontal disease don’t stop with dental health. As bacteria continues to grow, it can leach into your bloodstream and travel throughout your body causing problems. In fact, research has shown that the same oral bacteria that cause tooth decay have been found in the plaques that line your arteries, contributing to heart disease.

Your body reacts to these bacteria by sparking an inflammatory response. For this reason, periodontal disease can aggravate other inflammation-causing illnesses, such as rhuematoid arthritis, respiratory disease, kidney cancer, and even blood cancers like leukemia.

Periodontal disease has also been found to increase blood sugar, which is why it is so troublesome in people who have diabetes. In fact, people with diabetes are more likely to develop periodontal disease, and the mere presence of periodontal disease can signal the development of diabetes later in life–even if patients haven’t shown symptoms of diabetes yet.

Since periodontal disease causes health problems throughout your body, it decreases your overall immune response, which can put you at a higher risk for other infections.

To find out more about how periodontal disease could be affecting your health and how to combat this very real health threat, make an appointment with one of our Westchester periodontists. Our clinicians will take the time to carefully evaluate your teeth, gums, and overall oral health to talk with you about your risks, personal oral health condition, and treatment options.

Why We Love Composite Fillings

Nobody wants a mouth filled with dark metal, which is just one of the reasons we love composite fillings here at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale. Made from a durable resin mixture, composite fillings have come a long way since their inception over twenty years ago. Composite resin fillings placed in the 1990s weren’t strong enough to be placed in the back teeth, but all of that has changed. Nowadays, composite resin fillings, also called tooth colored or white fillings, are better than ever.

Cosmetic Advantages

Composite resin fillings are nearly invisible to the naked eye when placed by your Westchester cosmetic dentist. Composite fillings are available in a wide range of shades, allowing our clinicians to closely match the filling color to the shade of your natural teeth. Also, since composite material is slightly transparent, it mimics the natural opacity of your teeth, creating a restoration that blends in perfectly. For this reason, composite fillings can be used anywhere in the mouth without compromising aesthetics.

Non-Cosmetic Advantages

In addition to looking great, composite resin fillings also help dentists to keep the teeth healthy and strong. Unlike amalgam fillings, which essentially “sit” inside of the tooth, composite fillings are designed to bond with the enamel and dentin of the tooth, sealing out future decay. Teeth do not require “undercuts” to keep the fillings in place, preserving more of the natural tooth. Composite fillings cure in seconds, restoring as much as 95% of the original strength and stability to the tooth. To top it off, composite fillings are inexpensive and easy to repair if they ever become damaged.

Placement of Composite Fillings

Having composite resin fillings placed is only a little different from the traditional procedure. After the decay has been removed from the tooth, the area will be cleaned and sanitized. Next, a mild acidic compound will be painted onto the area in order to improve adhesion between the composite and the tooth. After that has been washed away and dried, the composite material is piped into place, and a handheld UV light is used to cure the filling.

There is a reason that our clinicians at Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale are known as some of the best dentists in Westchester County.  You won’t believe how good composite resin fillings look. For more information about these powerful restorations, contact us today!
