What Is A Dental Implant Procedure Like?

What Are Dental Implants?

If you’re considering getting dental implants, then you probably have a lot of questions about the procedure, not least what they actually are.

Dental implants are a kind of artificial teeth consisting of a crown and a post. The crown is a synthetic structure designed to look the same as a natural tooth. The post connects the crown to the jawbone. Dental implants are widely considered to be the gold standard of tooth replacement because, just like a natural tooth, they fix to the jaw, precisely simulating the presence of a tooth. You would never know that many people with dental implants had had teeth replaced.

The Stages Of A Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implant treatment has several stages.

The Initial Evaluation

The first stay of the treatment is to evaluate your current needs. Your Westchester dentist will perform a routine inspection of your mouth and use x-ray equipment to find out more about the structure of your teeth. After the investigation, the dentist will be able to choose implants that will match the look and structure of your existing teeth.

The next part of the evaluation process involves judging your mouth for compatibility with various types of implants and how many teeth may need replacing.

Finally, you’ll be able to consult with your dentist about your treatment options, including anesthesia. You’ll also learn about your role in the surgery, including things that you should do, and things you shouldn’t.

The Surgery

Dental implant surgery is done in several stages.

The first stage is to remove the damaged tooth, whether because of injury, infection or something else. Then the dental surgeon may prepare the jawbone. For implants to fit, it is something necessary to perform bone grafting work. If you have bone grafting work done, you’ll need to wait until the jawbone heals before more treatment can be completed.

The next step, once the jawbone has healed, is to insert the post of the implant into the gumline. Again, you’ll need to wait for the surrounding tissue to heal. During your final visit, the dentist will attach the crown – the part of the tooth that gives it its natural look.

It’s worth noting, therefore, that it will take several months for the process to complete. Once it is done, however, you’ll have a tooth replacement that will simulate the action of a real tooth.

After Surgery

It’s normal for people to experience some degree of discomfort after surgery. Your gums may swell around the site of a removed tooth or the newly installed implant. You may also have bruising in your gums or at the site of the implant.

If your symptoms persist, then there’s no need to suffer in silence. Book an appointment with your Westchester dentist and get your teeth seen straight away.

Remember to continue to look after your teeth once the implants are installed. You’ll want to brush at least twice a day and floss once per day and keep going to your dentist for regular checkups.
