New Year Goal: Whiter Teeth

New year goal: whiten your teeth! At Advanced Dentistry of Scarsdale, we aim to be your go-to cosmetic dentist in Westchester. We provide a wide range of cosmetic dentistry services, including teeth whitening. With the new year almost upon us, it is a great time to take stock of goals. If you want a whiter, brighter smile, having a goal to work on a whiter smile is a great one. This is the perfect time of year to get started.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that the number one thing people want to change about their smile is the whiteness of their teeth. It is no wonder that there are so many teeth whitening products available. While we offer many teeth whitening treatments in our office, there are also many homemade teeth whitening options you can use along with professional products.

How Do I Whiten My Teeth at Home?

Most products today use a substance called carbamide peroxide. This chemical can bread down into hydrogen peroxide and is the main bleaching agent. Generally, when it comes to do-it-yourself teeth whitening, it is best to use these solutions in moderation. Most of these homemade options use baking soda as their base.

Here are a few options for homemade, do-it-yourself teeth whitening solutions

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda
To use this method you should:

    • Use less baking soda than hydrogen peroxide in your mix
    • Combine two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and one tablespoon baking soda
    • Stir the mixture into a paste and brush your teeth with it
    • Let the paste sit on your teeth for a minute and rinse

It is important to remember to rinse afterwards so that no baking soda or hydrogen peroxide remains on your teeth. Also, limit using this mixture to two or three times per week as excess use can break down tooth enamel overtime.

  2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Using this product with baking soda can help remove stains and whiten teeth. Over a period of time, you are likely to see the impact. To make this paste, add two parts of the apple cider vinegar to one part baking soda. Use this solution a few times a week or use the apple cider vinegar as a mouthrinse along with your normal oral hygiene routine.
  3. Coconut Oil and Peppermint Leaf
